Jack Fletcher is an English boy and the main protagonist of the Young Samurai series. He is the son of John Fletcher, a navigator, and later Masamoto Takeshi's foster son as well as Masamoto Yamato's adoptive brother for the rest of the series.
There was no sign of his companions anywhere nearby. Akiko being a better swordswoman and had more training with the rapier as Jack was busy searching for his sister, defeated Jack in every duel during their training. As Jack tries to explain that Aku is the true enemy, multiple blue-green creatures arrive and attempt to eat them, with Ashi kicking Jack towards the horde in another attempt to kill him. The village chief tells Jack that he is the only one who can wield the samurai lord's magic sword, meaning Jack is the only one who can defeat Aku. During his time training Jack develops a friendship with the village chief's son. One night another village attacks, searching for Jack. Jack manages to hide but the other villagers are captured. Jack follows the attackers back to their own village. Jack spots the captured villages and smiles at seeing that they haven't been hurt. Jack then notices the attackers sitting around a fire. The attacker's chief creates a fire image of Aku and says "the great evil spirit" has promised them great treasure if they deliver "the little child of light skin" aka Jack to him. Jack notices a guard coming by and hides in one of the houses when he notices one of the weapons that the attackers used. Jack decides to practice using the weapon so he can save his friends from the attackers. After Jack finishes practicing with the weapon, he decides he is ready to save his friends. Jack and Akiko stumble upon Kazuki's gang beating Yori, and Jack tackles Kazuki to the ground, managing to punch him in the nose, but is no match for his skills. Yamato runs in along with Saburo , but is unwilling to help Jack upon Kazuki's goading that helping a gaijin is disgraceful. As he leaves, he vows to Jack that their feud isn't over and done with. Later, during the hanami party, Kazuki's gang takes the chance to fight Jack, but he is defended by Akiko and Saburo. During the heat of battle, Masamoto, who had been observing his students, stops them as Kamakura arrives on the scene. Masamoto accepts and sets the date as a day before the Gion Matsuri. Jack, Akiko, and Saburo would be fielded as the participants. The trio would then undergo intense training, and Sensei Yamada would be the first to prepare their minds for the upcoming battle. During the meditation, he asks Jack to tell him his fears, to which he answers death. Yamada tells him that there is no need to, for death is more universal than life. Everyone dies, but not everyone lives, Yamada tells him. Jack doesn't understand, to which Sensei Yamada replies that death is not the biggest fear he should have. Instead, it is taking the risk to be truly alive, and how he lives, even in death. He then concludes his lessons by telling the trio to conquer their inner fears. Jack then later queries Sensei Yamada about his dream of the red demon attacking the butterfly, to which the Sensei answers that cho-geri , the butterfly kick, could be the key to it. He then goes on to explain the technique of cho-geri , and that it is rumored to be invincible. He then demonstrates it on Jack, who is shocked that, despite his age, Sensei Yamada is still nimble. Saburo then tells him that Sensei Yamada is actually a sohei , or warrior monk, explaining his abilities. As they leave the Buddha Hall together, Kiku runs up and informs them that Yamato has fled from the school. FInally, it is time for the Taryu-Jiai. Akiko presumes that Yamato had lost too much face after the hanami incident, and couldn't deal with the shame; Yamato wants his father to lose face as well. Sensei Yosa interrupts them and tells them to concentrate on the competition at hand and not to be distracted. In the taijutsu segment, Jack faces Raiden.
